EDITORIAL RIGHTS REGARDING THE USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

The Boletín del Instituto Oceanográfico de Venezuela (BIOV) reserves the right to analyze manuscripts using specialized tools to identify content produced through artificial intelligence.

BIOV acknowledges that artificial intelligence (AI) tools can be useful in processes such as scientific writing, information analysis, and figure creation. However, in order to preserve academic integrity, promote transparency, and ensure accountability in scientific production, the following policy is established regarding the use of AI in manuscripts submitted for review. Manuscripts containing AI-generated content without proper disclosure may be rejected or withdrawn from publication.

Permitted Uses of AI Tools

Authors may use AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Bard, Midjourney, Grammarly, among others) as auxiliary assistants at any stage of manuscript preparation, provided that their use is explicitly disclosed.

Permitted uses include:

  • Language revision, spelling and grammar correction, or improving clarity and fluency of the text.

  • Creation of graphic elements such as figures, diagrams, or visual abstracts, as long as they are properly labeled and sources are cited.

  • Assistance in the search for scientific literature or data processing, provided that the results are verified by the authors.

The use of AI to generate complete sections must be transparent, justified, and clearly described in the manuscript, especially if it exceeds 20% of the total content. Beyond this threshold, the originality and intellectual rigor of the manuscript may be questioned, and it will be subject to stricter review or limitations. If the percentage surpasses this limit, authors will be required to provide justification, undergo exhaustive revision, or face possible rejection due to lack of original intellectual contribution.

The majority (80–90%) of the manuscript must result from original work, critical analysis, and intellectual curation by the human authors.

Additionally:

  • Any paragraph showing a similarity percentage greater than 30% with previously published research must be paraphrased to reduce overlap.

Prohibited Uses of AI Tools

Authors are strictly prohibited from:

  • Using AI to generate 100% of the original research content (such as results, analysis, or conclusions) without thorough verification by the responsible human authors.

  • Submitting AI-generated content that has not been rigorously reviewed and corrected by the authors themselves. Authors must conduct a comprehensive and critical review of any AI-assisted content to ensure scientific accuracy and avoid errors or inappropriate information.

  • Presenting manuscripts written entirely by AI without demonstrable human intellectual contribution.

  • Attributing authorship or co-authorship to AI tools, as AI is not considered an author and cannot assume ethical or legal responsibility for the content.

  • Manipulating, falsifying, or fabricating data using AI technologies.

???? Disclosure Requirement

Authors must explicitly declare any use of AI tools in the preparation of their manuscript, including:

  • The name of the AI tool used.

  • The version number (if available).

  • The specific function it performed (e.g., language correction, figure generation, text optimization, data analysis, partial content generation).

⚖️ Editorial Transparency and Ethics

Author responsibility: Authors are fully responsible for the truthfulness, originality, and integrity of the entire manuscript, including sections where AI assistance was used.

The use of AI to fabricate data, manipulate results, conceal plagiarism, or generate misleading or fraudulent content is strictly prohibited. Violation of these rules will be considered a serious breach of scientific ethics, potentially leading to manuscript withdrawal or sanctions in accordance with the editorial policy.

The journal may request additional evidence regarding the use of AI during the review process or after publication to ensure compliance with these policies.

Failure to disclose or inappropriate use of AI may result in rejection or retraction of the manuscript.

Any mistakes, plagiarism, or ethical misconduct related to the use of AI will be attributed directly to the authors as a violation.

✍️ Example of AI Use Statement:

"Parts of the text were edited to improve grammar and clarity using ChatGPT (OpenAI, GPT-4 version). All content was reviewed and approved by the authors."
