Coastal lagoons belong to sectors of transit and mix of energy, water and sediments coming from mainland
and the sea. Lagoons located in areas with strong marine dynamics are environments subject to fast changes in their morphosedimentary
and environmental characteristics. To evaluate the characteristics of surficial sediments in the Laguna de Las
Marites were taken 12 surface sediment samples. From samples, we were able to determine the grain size, to identify the
sedimentary texture, and to analyze physicochemical variables, such as: organic matter and carbonates. Based on a cluster
analysis of variables was estimated the spatial distribution of sediments inside the lagoon. From the results, were identified two
zones with marked differences between their sedimentary characteristics: West (mouths and western area) and Near East
(eastern area). Was observed a grain decomposition equal to: 49% sand, 41% clay and 10% silt. That represents that the
granulometric composition is heterometric among three textures: sandy, clayey and silty clay. Finally, since organic matter
showed values between 2% and 25%, and carbonates ranged from 1% to 33%, it can be affirmed that the lagoon shows a strong
dynamic of bottom mobilization with wide areas of deposition of sediments.
