An inventory of epiphytic macroalgae associated to black mangrove Avicennia germinans pneumatophores
was performed in four stations in El Morro lagoon, Margarita Island, between march 2011 and january 2012. Five
pneumatophores were naked in situ in each station to release epiphytic macroalgae, which were preserved in 4% formalin. For
identification, histological sections and morpho-anatomical observations were made. Thirty seven species were identified, 20
of which corresponding to Phylum Chlorophyta (54 %), 13 to Rhodophyta (35 %) and 4 to Heterokonthophyta (11 %).
Filamentary and foliar macroalgae constituted the greatest number of species. Green algae presented the higher number of
taxons, which could be attributed to continuous waste-water downloads, draining in this water body. Identified species in this
work are typical of tropical systems and El Morro lagoon is a suitable environment for the establishment of marine
macroalgae.
