The cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. A0185001PS isolated from the Artificial Solar Salt pans of Araya (Araya, Sucre) undergoes morphological changes when it is incubated at different NaCl concentrations. In this paper, the effects of NaCl concentration, light intensity, and temperature on growth and mucilage production in Synechococcus sp. A0185001PS are studied. Bioassays were carried out under the following conditions: culture media (450 ml-1) enriched with Medium A (50 ml•l-1); NaCl concentration from 0.5 to 3.0 M; continuous irradiance, 50 and 78 µE • m-2•s-1; temperature of 26, 30 and 35 °C; and constant aeration, 200 ml • min-1. It was found that the concentration of NaCl as well as light intensity and temperature had a significant influence on the population density of the cyanobacterium. The highest growth rate, 1.7 div•day-1 occurred in organisms cultured under the following conditions: continuous irradiance of 0,5 M. The cyanobacterium did not produce mucilage under any of the experimental conditions.
