This study on food and feeding habits of Paralabrax dewegeri was based on 948 individuals captured during Sept. 1987 to Nov. 1988 around the Cubagua Island and Punta Araya, Venezuela. The branquial apparatus was composed of 4 pairs of branchial arches with 18 to 24 branquial spines of different sizes, the extreme ends were less developed than the center. The oesophagus was short and tubular, the texture of which was thicker than the stomach. The last named one was relatively big and the walls were very elastic. There were 8 to 10 pyloric caecae at the junction of stomach and the intestine, with an average of 8. The intestine was long, thick with wall of little resistence. The mean intestinal index was 1.21 for the samples of Cubagua Island and 1.36 for Punta Araya. P. dewegeri in Cubagua Island showed highly significant index of fullness for the months of Sept. '87; May and July '88, while Nov. '87 and Sept. '88 showed the least fullness. The months of March, May, July and August '88 showed the highest value of fullness in the samples at Punta Araya, while the lowest was for the months of November and December '87. The Index of vacuity of this species was low, with a mean value of 4,09% for Cubagua and 3,95% for Punta Araya. P. dewegeri is classified as carnivorous based on the food and feeding habits. Analysis of the results of frequency of ocurrence (f) and Numerical Ocurrence (ON) of stomach contents, indicate top preference for crabs, followed by shrimps, fishes, and ophiuroids for the samples of Cubagua and crabs, fishes, shrimps and ophiuroids for the sample of Punta Araya. The diet of this species did not vary with size.
