In the coastal area of Anzoátegui State, from Maurica beach to Pertigalete Bay, a surface film of greasy material, occasional residues of biodegradate petroleum and tar balls on the beach were observed. The aliphatic hydrocarbons produced by this waste was determined by infrared and gas liquid chromatographic techniques. The greatest concentrations were found in the mouth of the Neverí river (50 - 90 µg/l), and near the effluent of Corpoven refinery (60-80 µg/l). The distribution of the n-alkanes from n-C17 to n-C32, increase of the base line of the chromatograms and the non-resolved organic compounds indicated the petrogenic origen of the hydrocarbons, which were found all over the surface of Pozuelos Bay and adjacent areas.
