FLUCTUACIONES TEMPORALES DEL ICTIOPLANCTON EN EL SECTOR LAS CARACAS, PARQUE NACIONAL MOCHIMA, VENEZUELA

Abstract

The fertility area in the northeastern Venezuelan shelf is an area especially rich in fishing resources, influenced by the coastal upwelling and the enrichment of nutrients that it causes. This process happens seasonally with a previously described regularity. To evaluate possible changes in the biotic variables of the ichthyoplankton, associated with the period of the year, monthly surface trawls were carried out in 6 stations in the Las Caracas sector, Mochima National Park, Venezuela. For all the variables studied, most of the results of the multivariate analyzes indicate a general association of the typical months of upwelling in the area. In stations exposed to wind and waves (E1, E2, E3 and E4), there is a tendency to increase the biomass of the accompanying plankton of the larvae and to decrease the temperature and transparency of the water, during the upwelling. In the leeward stations (E5 and E6), on the contrary, in the upwelling months the lowest values of plankton biomass were recorded. Differences between sampling stations occur not only with respect to the averages of many of the variables, but also with respect to how those variables fluctuate over time. The results suggest that many species in the area spawn before the upwelling period. The fluctuations of the ichthyoplankton in Las Caracas, in relation to the upwelling,
place this fishing resource at the expense of the annual cycle of winds, thus global climate changes that
alter the regularity of this cycle, could have important ecological and economic consequences
