ABUNDANCIA Y DISTRIBUCIÓN VERTICAL-TEMPORAL DE LA DENSIDAD DE HUEVOS Y LARVAS DE PECES EN AGUAS OCEÁNICAS SUPERFICIALES DE LA FOSA DE CARIACO, VENEZUELA

Abstract

The distribution and abundance of fish eggs and larvae are influenced by the action of biotic and abiotic factors. The research objective was to determine the distribution and density of fish eggs and larvae in surface waters in the Cariaco Trench. The collections were made during the day, on board the B/O HNO. GINS; from October-2012 to December-2013, using a standard conical hanging net with a diameter of 35 cm and pores of 300 microns, with a messenger closure device. The drafts were horizontal, for 15 minutes at a speed of 2 knots, in depths of 0-5-10-20 m. The environmental data come from the registry of the CARIACO Project. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to detect differences between campaigns and depths. The medians of the environmental variables were: temperature 26.54 °C, salinity 36.72 PSU, dissolved oxygen 4.41 ml l-1, pH 8.06, chlorophyll a 0.16 mg m-3, primary productivity 1.20 mgC m-3 hr-1. In 2012, the general median of the emergence index was 86.69 and in 2013 it was 3098.12, presenting differences within and between years. Median egg density and larval density were 14.15 eggs. 100 m3 and 2.22 larvae. 100 m3, obtaining differences between campaigns; only the density of larvae showed differences between depths. These results demonstrate that the seasonal change in wind intensity and direction is the driving force behind the annual variability in hydrographic parameters, which in turn model biological dynamics.
