Abstract

Planktonic foraminifera are sensitive to variations in the marine environment, becoming living tools for detecting ecosystem changes at any given time; however in the Gulf of Cariaco they have been little studied. The present study aims to evaluate the abundance and composition of these microfossils. The samples were collected weekly, during the periods of upwelling (May-April), transition (June-July) and relaxation (October-November) from 2014 at 2, 6, 10 and 16 meters depth. Samples were taken with a Niskin bottle (5L), and they were subsequently filtered with a 100 μm mesh (microzooplankton). Abiotic and biotic variables showed temporal significant differences (weeks and periods), while temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrite and phosphate varied vertically. Four species of foraminifera were identified: Gloroborotalia menardii, Hastiggerina pelagica, Globigerina sp1 and Globigerina sp2. The abundance of foraminifera presented temporal differences, the largest being in relaxation (33,700 org.m-3) and the lowest in upwelling (1300 org.m-3). The ACC showed marked differences between the abiotic and biotic variables and the dominant species in each period.
